Update:
The Weyerhaeuser timber company has gated the road that most directly accesses the trailhead to Upper Butte Creek and Butte Creek waterfalls. The Salem Statesman Journal reports that hiking is allowed along the road, adding 1.5 miles to the trek. They also passed on an alternative drivable route (without mileages) that will get you to the trailhead from the opposite direction. Distances are included here based upon measurements using Google Earth.

In downtown Scotts Mills at the post office along 3rd Street, cross Butte Creek and turn right in 0.1 miles upon the western end of Maple Grove Road. Drive 7.4 miles to a "T" and turn right (south) upon Sawtell Road. Proceed 5.3 miles to the end of the paved surface and bear left at the split upon Family Camp Road. Bear right at forks in 2.5 miles (Butte Creek Mainline Road?), then 0.7 miles (Butte Creek 500?), then another 0.7 miles (second of successive junctions), then 0.6 miles (Crooked Finger Road?). After 1.1 miles is a crossing of Butte Creek, with the trailhead on your right between 0.7 and 1.0 miles along Crooked Finger Road in the downstream direction. As you can probably tell, it's kind of a maze, so having a GPS unit is strongly advised.
